South Melbourne wants to be second Victorian A-League club

FOUR-TIME NSL champion South Melbourne has wasted little time in responding to State Government suggestions that a second A-League team should be set up to play at the new $200 million Olympic Park stadium if Melbourne Victory opted to stay at the larger Telstra Dome.

The Albert Park club, once the nation's most successful soccer outfit, has written what it describes as "a letter of interest" to the Government after Major Projects Minister Theo Theophanous floated the suggestion of a second franchise for Melbourne last week.

It revealed yesterday that a consortium of investors, heartened by the success of Melbourne Victory and soccer's burgeoning popularity, had approached South with a view to using the club as the vehicle to bid for a second licence for the 2010-11 season. That is the year that Victory's five-year period of exclusivity in its market place expires.

"The people in this consortium have the money and have made it clear that the operating budget of $5 million to $6 million a year would not be an issue," South spokesman Jim Maris said yesterday.

"If we could get a licence we would most likely look to play at the new stadium and use Bob Jane Stadium as a training base and social club for members and supporters," Maris said.

In other news; An Auckland consortium pulled out of its bid to field an A-League franchise last night, leaving one candidate — a Wellington-Palmerston North bid — in contention for the licence revoked from the New Zealand Knights in December.
