New A-League team decides on Melbourne Heart

The newest A-League team has decided to stick with the name Melbourne Heart.

After working under the title since day one, the second Melbourne club will retain the Heart moniker, deciding to go against the mooted Sporting Melbourne FC.

The Heart will play in a red and white strip but whether that is stripes like English clubs Sunderland and Stoke City or a red sash on a white background like Argentina’s River Plate is yet to be confirmed.

The 11th A-League club also released their logo which is the initials M and H inside a stylised red heart and club CEO Scott Munn said that the city of Melbourne was well represented by the colours and logo of the club.

"Sport is an essential part of our city's cultural fabric and helps bind our community in a very unique way. It essentially defines what it means to be Victorian, and we believe our name, Melbourne Heart, is representative of that," Munn said.

Heart head coach John van ‘t Schip was happy the club kept the name as it was his favourite when the choices were made official.

"The supporters having an opportunity to name their football team is very special. Melbourne Heart was a personal favourite of mine from early on, so I'm pleased that the supporters have gone this way," he said.

"Now this important step is in place, the club will continue to work hard to attract some great talent to Victoria so that we can build a competitive team and hopefully surprise a little when the A-League starts next season."
