Melbourne's new A-League franchise is back to square one in its search for a coach less then a year out from its unveiling, after the Dutchman headhunted to lead the side rejected the offer.
Henk van Stee, the 47-year-old, who was offered a three-year contract to coach Melbourne Heart, told the club of his decision in the last 48 hours.
"I will not be taking the job with Melbourne," Van Stee said from The Netherlands on Thursday night.
"I'm very disappointed because it was a fantastic challenge. I was ready to start, but the only problem was the family and family is more important than work to me. I feel a bit guilty but I want to be fair with the club.
"It's better to make the decision now and let the club move on than in one or two months because it would be an even bigger problem for them. I hope people understand my decision."
Less than two weeks ago, Van Stee hinted that there were only a few minor issues to resolve with the contract and he was ready to start.
"When I came to Melbourne (last month) to speak to the club, my family were very supportive and they were excited," he said.
"But when the contract was offered I think only then did it sink in for them. My daughter was crying and my son was also getting upset.
"I stress the club was fantastic and really offered to look after them, but moving to Australia is not like moving to another country in Europe."
It has always been Heart's intention to hire a Dutch coach with a proven track record for technical knowledge and developing young players, but Heart chief executive Scott Munn said losing Van Stee may force the club to consider somebody from elsewhere in Europe.
"There's no secret about our intention to have a Dutch coach, but the (remaining candidates) are not necessarily Dutch," Munn said.
"We've been talking for a while to a couple of candidates who we're extremely keen on."'
Ruud Gullit and former Ajax and Porto coach Co Adriaanse have also been mentioned, but they appear to be out of Heart's price range.
Adriaanse, who has an impressive CV, recently rejected an offer to rejoin Ajax.
