Heart Unveil Away Strip

MELBOURNE Heart have revealed their away strip for next season - and it's a River Plate-style white shirt with red sash to add a touch of South America kick to their side.
Heart Chief Executive Officer Scott Munn said: "As a club with traditional football values, we wanted an away jersey which captured the essence of what we are about as an organisation.
"And with the unveiling of our new strip, we are confident we have achieved that, while also introducing a design which is unique to the Hyundai A-League."
The team also announced global recruitment firm Drake International as the club's sleeve sponsor.
Munn believes Drake's partnership will provide a massive boost for the club as it approaches its A-League debut in August.
"Melbourne Heart FC is delighted to have Drake on board as our sleeve sponsor for the next two years, joining the Club as we embark on this exciting journey," he said.

EXCLUSIVE: Melbourne Heart’s Kristian Sarkies says his goal is to return from injury for the much-anticipated first Melbourne derby against his former teammates Victory this October at AAMI Park.
The skilful midfielder was operated on about 12 weeks ago after breaking his leg playing for Adelaide United in an NYL clash following a wild lunge by Perth Glory's Steven Hesketh.
Sarkies is undergoing a rehab program and he is planning to start running next month. But the 23-year-old wants to take his time to ensure the recovery is 100 percent.
That's why Sarkies believes October should be the month he's back in contention for a starting berth in John van't Schip's side.
And he's pencilled in the historic October 2 clash against his former teammates Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park.
"It's the goal I've set for my comeback game. If I do all the right things off the park then you never know. You have to set a goal, don't you?" he told au.fourfourtwo.com at Heart's promotional trip to Geelong earlier this week.
Despite being away from the training group, Sarkies likes what he sees of the new A-League franchise and believes they have the set-up to build a successful A-League franchise - just like his previous club Victory.
"Here, it's a very professional football environment which was a key thing that brought me back," he said. "There are first-class facilities.
"This is my third A-League club and it'd be up there as one of the best, from the training parks to the physios and doctors and whole crew.
It's all in the one area; we don't have to travel anywhere to do anything.
"I enjoy the Dutch coaches and even the assistant coaches we have in Jesper Olsen and Ante Milicic are great people to have.
"I'm just looking to the future now with that new stadium. It looks amazing.
I haven't officially been in since it's been finished but I've driven past it.
"Exciting times ahead - I'm just looking forward to my first official training session in the red and white."
And from what he's seen so far, Sarkies says former Jets skipper Matt Thompson can stamp his authority on the club.
"I think Matty Thompson will be a big part of Melbourne Heart," said Sarkies. "The season he had last year was first class.
"If he can bring that form into Heart ... he's very much a leader and a goal-scoring midfielder."
For Sarkies though, it will be a challenge for to carve out a regular spot with Heart's starting XI already taking shape after a flurry of recent player announcements.
In what looms as a 4-3-3, in goals will be Clint Bolton with a defensive four likely to be Heffernan, Colosimo, Beauchamp and Marrone.
The deep lying playmaker is likely to be Joe Skoko with Matt Thompson and Wayne Srhoj playing more advanced roles in front of the former Socceroo star.
And up forward big Gerald Sibon is the likely target-man with wide players Brazilian Alex Terra and Dutchman Rutger Worm working off the big striker.
It's an impressive starting side that also has John Aloisi, Jason Hoffman and Sarkies to push for starting selection. And Sarkies can't wait for the challenge.
"Look out for us next season, I think we'll be a very tough side to play," he added.

DEAN Heffernan has ended his stint with English third tier club Huddersfield Town and believes his taste of English football can only help him in his new challenge with Melbourne Heart.
Heffernan had joined the Yorkshire club in the hope of boosting his World Cup chances but it wasn't to be.
He also suffered heartache at club level as Town were beaten by Millwall in the League One play-off semi-final.

MELBOURNE Heart today signed one of the final key pieces of their debut squad as 2008 Dutch Olympian Gerald Sibon joined from Dutch Eredivisie side Heerenveen.
The 36 year old former Ajax and PSV striker joins Heart after the towering striker scored 15 times in 27 starts last season in the Eredivisie, including three goals during Heerenveen's 2009/10 UEFA Europa League campaign and strikes home and away against PSV.
Heart coach John van ‘t Schip is delighted to have signed Sibon and is convinced the target man, who stands just short of two metres tall, will be an influential figure within the A-League.
"The coaching staff has spent the last seven months watching matches in Australia, Europe, Asia and South America to find the striker that has the skills and the mentality to fit into our team and the A-League," he said. "I am very confident Gerald is that player.
"Gerald is physically strong, but his real strength is with the ball at his feet and bringing his team-mates into the match. He has been in excellent form with Heerenveen this season, particularly in the second half of the season, so hopefully he will be able to maintain that level of performance with us."
Van ‘t Schip believes Sibon will also play a crucial role in mentoring up to seven younger members of the Heart side, including 18-year-old AIS graduate Eli Babalj.
"Gerald is a top professional and a winner," he said. "He has obtained experience in some of the best and toughest competitions in world football such as the UEFA Champions League.
"The lessons he can provide to the younger members of our team at training and during the match will prove very important in helping to shape the Club's culture for many years to come."
Having played in England's Premier League with Sheffield Wednesday and the German Bundesliga, Sibon arrives in Melbourne boasting an impressive resume at the elite level.
Sibon was an over-23 member of the Netherlands Olympic Football Team during the 2008 Beijing Games, scoring twice in four starts alongside Roy Makaay and Ryan Babel, while he has also collected a swag of honours at domestic level.
Sibon has five Dutch Cup winners medals, including the 2009 title, three Eredivisie championships and the 2007 German Pokal Cup with FC Nurnberg, where he was a team mate of fellow Heart players Michael Beauchamp and Dean Heffernan.

Skoko, 34, returns to Victoria following a decorated 15-year professional career completed entirely in Europe and Heart coach John van ‘t Schip hailed his capture as a major milestone for the club.

WORLD Cup hopeful Michael Beauchamp will be heading home to the A-League after the Socceroos campaign in South Africa for a new challenge with Melbourne Heart.
Beauchamp has signed a multi-year deal to return to the Hyundai A-League following a four-year stint in Europe, becoming the 16th player to pledge his future to John van 't Schip's side.
Beauchamp has earned 19 caps at senior international level since winning selection to the Socceroos 23-man squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.
And the 29-year-old is poised to play a role in the upcoming FIFA World Cup campaign in South Africa as well after he was named in Pim Verbeek's preliminary 31-man squad for June's global football showcase.
Beauchamp will arrive in camp with the Socceroos today as he presses his claim for a place in the final squad which will be announced on June 1.
Van 't Schip believes Beauchamp's signing will help ensure the Heart boasts a solid defensive core, providing the necessary rearguard stability to implement the Club's attacking philosophy.
"Michael has accumulated experience in some of the top competitions in Europe and Asia, and is one of the few Australians to have ever taken part in the UEFA Champions League," he said.
"He is an excellent athlete, has great distribution skills and is a natural leader. I am confident Michael will be able to provide stability and play an important role as part of the back four."
The former Mariners defender said the opportunity to play first team football was the key to his homecoming.
"Coming to Melbourne is a great opportunity for me to get playing regularly again, and I know a lot of the boys and the coaching staff and have only heard good things about the structure of the club," Beauchamp said.
"I didn't really look into (remaining overseas). I felt this was the right move for me."

Heff Vows To Bounce Back

DEAN Heffernan remains upbeat about his international prospects despite the bitter disappointment of missing out on the Socceroos squad for the South African World Cup.
Heffernan had been a potential bolter after his last outing in an Australian shirt drew plenty of praise.
However, it wasn't to be for the former Central Coast Mariner, currently enjoying a stint with promotion-chasing Huddersfield Town in England's League One.
Heffernan and his colleagues are preparing to take on Millwall in the semi-finals of the play-offs.
The winner goes on to Wembley for a winner-takes-all promotion showdown with the victor of the other semi-final clash (Swindon Town or Charlton Athletic).
Promotion would help cushion the blow of losing out on a World Cup spot.
David Carney and Scott Chipperfield got the nodd ahead of Heffernan this week when Verbeek named his initial squad.
"The coach has said he wants players who can cover a couple of positions, which Scott and David can," the Melbourne Heart-bound player told the Huddersfield Examiner.
"Missing out is a major disappointment, especially at this stage of my career, but I've done everything possible to get there, so I have to take it on the chin.

MELBOURNE'S first true A-League derby between Victory and Heart will be played at AAMI Park on October 2.
The showdown has been strategically scheduled to follow the AFL season, giving the A-League a clear run in Melbourne and a week of solid publicity in a bid to pack AAMI Park.
It is believed the A-League schedule will be released next week after fine-tuning by clubs and Football Federation Australia, which has fixtured more matches than ever with each team set to feature in 30 matches between August and March.
While the first of three Melbourne derbies during the season will be greatly anticipated, Victory is believed to renew its rivalry with grand final opponent Sydney FC at Sydney Football Stadium on opening weekend.
The schedule, which is believed to be in its final draft, will feature a lot more midweek games to allow for the competition's expansion and the fact the league will expand from a 135-game calendar to 165 matches.
SOCCEROOS star Tim Cahill is almost certain to play for club team Everton in a friendly against Melbourne Heart.
Cahill has indicated he will play for Everton against Heart at Etihad Stadium on July 14.

Heart's Olsen joins TWG

Melbourne Heart FC assistant coach and former Ajax favourite Jesper Olsen joins The World Game's online team as its A-League insider.
Olsen, who played 43 times for Denmark, scoring five goals across his 10-year international career, will provide exclusive blogs on the A-League as well as all other aspects of football in his adopted home, Australia, all available at The World Game.
The 49-year-old will provide a unique insight into the workings of the A-League's newest franchise while also giving his thoughts on the competition and the players and teams that compete within it.
"I'm delighted to be working with SBS and The World Game website," Olsen said. "It's the perfect partnership in my opinion.
"The World Game team is unique in having such a wide and deep understanding of football, so to be involved in providing an inside look at the A-League competition and more in my first season here will be a real privilege."
As well as winning the Dutch Double with Ajax in 1982-1983 alongside Johan Cruyff, and the Eredivisie title with the Dutch super club in the previous season, Olsen spent five years at English giant Manchester United, where he scored 24 goals from the left wing and won the 1985 FA Cup.
Olsen will begin writing for SBS on Monday 17 May, ahead of the 2010 World Cup, providing an insight into the world's biggest sporting event through the eyes of someone that played in it.
He was part of the 1986 Denmark squad that became known as the Dynamite Danes, finding the back of the net three times during the tournament, including games against the then West Germany and Spain.
Olsen now has a select group of Heart players to work with, including some of Australia's best local players, such as goalkeeper Clint Bolton, defender Simon Colosimo and strikers Matt Thompson and John Aloisi.

Brazilian Striker Alex Terra Signs For Heart

Melbourne Heart FC is set to display some samba flair during the upcoming Hyundai A-League season after the Club confirmed the signing of Brazilian forward Alex Barbosa de Azevedo Terra.
Known as Alex Terra, the 27-year-old has signed a multi-year deal to join the Heart straight from Brazilian top flight football, becoming the side’s second ever foreign signing, following the capture of former Dutch youth international Rutger Worm.
A versatile attacker who can lead the line, play out wide or as a shadow striker, Terra achieved his greatest success with South American giants Fluminense, claiming the Rio de Janeiro State championship in 2002 and 2005, completing the latter campaign as his club’s top scorer.
Head Coach John van ‘t Schip was impressed by Terra after watching the Rio de Janeiro born star in action during his recent scouting trip to South America, immediately moving to secure his services for the Heart’s inaugural Hyundai A-League campaign.
Van ‘t Schip is confident Terra possesses the necessary qualities to make a significant impact and aid the Club in achieving its ambition of building a highly competitive squad.
“I think it is important for Melbourne Heart FC to have a mix of different sorts of players- different nationalities, different qualities, different ages- but players who all want to play good football and win,” he said.
“The club is fortunate to have recruited a South American player like Alex Terra, of such quality and of a good age, who is keen to play in Melbourne.
“He has a great first touch, great pace and an eye for goal, while most importantly, he is extremely versatile and capable of playing anywhere across the attacking line.”
Alex Terra’s performances with Fluminense won him a transfer to Portugal’s Nacional before returning to his homeland where he signed for Ponte Preta in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B, scoring a stunning 19 times in 24 games to earn a return to the top flight with Goias.
The diminutive front man recently completed a stint with Rio Branco in the Campeonato Paulista, the leading State Championship in the Brazilian football system featuring the likes of Ronaldo’s Corinthians and Sao Paolo, scoring against giants Palmeiras in March to confirm his undoubted talent.
