MELBOURNE'S first true A-League derby between Victory and Heart will be played at AAMI Park on October 2.
The showdown has been strategically scheduled to follow the AFL season, giving the A-League a clear run in Melbourne and a week of solid publicity in a bid to pack AAMI Park.
It is believed the A-League schedule will be released next week after fine-tuning by clubs and Football Federation Australia, which has fixtured more matches than ever with each team set to feature in 30 matches between August and March.
While the first of three Melbourne derbies during the season will be greatly anticipated, Victory is believed to renew its rivalry with grand final opponent Sydney FC at Sydney Football Stadium on opening weekend.
The schedule, which is believed to be in its final draft, will feature a lot more midweek games to allow for the competition's expansion and the fact the league will expand from a 135-game calendar to 165 matches.
SOCCEROOS star Tim Cahill is almost certain to play for club team Everton in a friendly against Melbourne Heart.
Cahill has indicated he will play for Everton against Heart at Etihad Stadium on July 14.

Heart's Olsen joins TWG

Melbourne Heart FC assistant coach and former Ajax favourite Jesper Olsen joins The World Game's online team as its A-League insider.
Olsen, who played 43 times for Denmark, scoring five goals across his 10-year international career, will provide exclusive blogs on the A-League as well as all other aspects of football in his adopted home, Australia, all available at The World Game.
The 49-year-old will provide a unique insight into the workings of the A-League's newest franchise while also giving his thoughts on the competition and the players and teams that compete within it.
"I'm delighted to be working with SBS and The World Game website," Olsen said. "It's the perfect partnership in my opinion.
"The World Game team is unique in having such a wide and deep understanding of football, so to be involved in providing an inside look at the A-League competition and more in my first season here will be a real privilege."
As well as winning the Dutch Double with Ajax in 1982-1983 alongside Johan Cruyff, and the Eredivisie title with the Dutch super club in the previous season, Olsen spent five years at English giant Manchester United, where he scored 24 goals from the left wing and won the 1985 FA Cup.
Olsen will begin writing for SBS on Monday 17 May, ahead of the 2010 World Cup, providing an insight into the world's biggest sporting event through the eyes of someone that played in it.
He was part of the 1986 Denmark squad that became known as the Dynamite Danes, finding the back of the net three times during the tournament, including games against the then West Germany and Spain.
Olsen now has a select group of Heart players to work with, including some of Australia's best local players, such as goalkeeper Clint Bolton, defender Simon Colosimo and strikers Matt Thompson and John Aloisi.

Brazilian Striker Alex Terra Signs For Heart

Melbourne Heart FC is set to display some samba flair during the upcoming Hyundai A-League season after the Club confirmed the signing of Brazilian forward Alex Barbosa de Azevedo Terra.
Known as Alex Terra, the 27-year-old has signed a multi-year deal to join the Heart straight from Brazilian top flight football, becoming the side’s second ever foreign signing, following the capture of former Dutch youth international Rutger Worm.
A versatile attacker who can lead the line, play out wide or as a shadow striker, Terra achieved his greatest success with South American giants Fluminense, claiming the Rio de Janeiro State championship in 2002 and 2005, completing the latter campaign as his club’s top scorer.
Head Coach John van ‘t Schip was impressed by Terra after watching the Rio de Janeiro born star in action during his recent scouting trip to South America, immediately moving to secure his services for the Heart’s inaugural Hyundai A-League campaign.
Van ‘t Schip is confident Terra possesses the necessary qualities to make a significant impact and aid the Club in achieving its ambition of building a highly competitive squad.
“I think it is important for Melbourne Heart FC to have a mix of different sorts of players- different nationalities, different qualities, different ages- but players who all want to play good football and win,” he said.
“The club is fortunate to have recruited a South American player like Alex Terra, of such quality and of a good age, who is keen to play in Melbourne.
“He has a great first touch, great pace and an eye for goal, while most importantly, he is extremely versatile and capable of playing anywhere across the attacking line.”
Alex Terra’s performances with Fluminense won him a transfer to Portugal’s Nacional before returning to his homeland where he signed for Ponte Preta in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B, scoring a stunning 19 times in 24 games to earn a return to the top flight with Goias.
The diminutive front man recently completed a stint with Rio Branco in the Campeonato Paulista, the leading State Championship in the Brazilian football system featuring the likes of Ronaldo’s Corinthians and Sao Paolo, scoring against giants Palmeiras in March to confirm his undoubted talent.

FORMER Socceroo Josip Skoko has confirmed he is heading back to Australia when the season with current club Hajduk Split ends, with Melbourne Heart the likely location.
It seems that Melbourne Heart is the most likely location for the midfielder, but if he plans to play or just assume a coaching role with the new franchise is yet to become clear.
In translated quotes from the Split official site, the 34-year old has stated: "I'm definitely going. There were informal discussions, but Hajduk know that me and my family have decided [to return to Australia].
Of joining the Heart, Skoko commented that he may assume a role as a youth coach at first and then "see if I'll go any further".
Skoko also reflected favourably on the standard of play in Croatia and the time he has spent at the club, first in the late 90s, and during the last two years.

Lessons To Learn From The AFL

ANALYSIS: For A-League clubs like Gold Coast, the AFL’s community minded approach to their sport is something to learn from as football seeks to grow its supporter base.
In a speech to La Trobe University, AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou offered an insight into some of the reasons why his sport has grown to a stage that it generates around $3.4 billion and employs around 10,000 people (according to the AFL).
With two new clubs joining the A-League together with a plateau in crowds across the league, it's a message that should resonate in A-League boardrooms.
"We may be a big business and a sporting body but the AFL is also a community and cultural organisation that is in a unique and privileged position of being able to use our game and the interest it generates to effect social change," he said.
"People might ask what all of this has to do with football? The answer is everything.
You can't claim to be a leader or leading organization if you don't care about or embrace the notion of trying to build a better community.
"We genuinely believe our success is based on our connection with the community."
Demetriou offered examples of the NAB Cup Bushfire Appeal match last year as part of the code's response to Black Saturday.
There are also examples of work in the communities such as Kinglake, a program to encourage women to be involved in the sport, multicultural and youth homlessness programs and the code's expanded vilification rule that were welcomed by the gay and lesbian community.
These are all instances of the AFL taking a pro-active approach to its place in Australian society.
It's something a number of A-League clubs can learn from.
Gold Coast United failed miserably in making a connection with many on the Gold Coast last season.
Their community programs were half-hearted, built largely on the belief that fans will turn up to see a successful side that was backed by a mega rich owner. They forgot that clubs are built around people and communities.
And while Miron Bleiberg's men were successful on the park, off the field the club lacked heart and soul.
As one Gold Coast football insider told au.fourfourtwo.com: "We didn't like their approach... we're country people here, we don't like being talked down to."
Now the Gold Coast will also soon have an AFL side in the area, and Demetriou made it clear how the club would be set up.
"Make no mistake, the Gold Coast Football Club is being built by the Gold Coast community," he said in the speech.
However it's encouraging to see Melbourne Heart starting their community programmes and becoming accessible to the community.
And that leadership comes from the top with former AFL administrator Scott Munn running the agenda at the new club.
Elsewhere, Sydney Rovers have begun their listening tour to gain feedback from their core community.
And Sydney FC have also begun to boost their community initiatives after they failed badly to capitalise on their first A-League championship in 2006.
Football clubs are about people and communities. It's something the AFL have embraced. The A-League needs to follow suit.
Even the US has grasped the concept, with former MLS club President Peter Wilt recently spelling out his philosophy in an excellent deconstruction of how to create a successful club rather than a franchise.
As Demetriou added of his code: "It's a game that brings people together. And it's this commitment to community that's driving our expansion plans for Gold Coast and Western Sydney".

Croatian Cup Joy For Ex-Roo Skoko

MELBOURNE Heart marquee target Josip Skoko was celebrating his first cup triumph with current club Hajduk Split after they picked up the Croatian Cup overnight.
It is the first time Split have won the trophy since 2003 and came after they overpowered Sibenik 2-0 in the second leg of the two match final for an aggregate 4-1 victory.
"We would have preferred to win the league and cup double but it is still a great feeling because it's my first trophy in a Hajduk shirt," said retired Socceroo Skoko after the match.
Ante Vukusic fired Hajduk ahead in the 16th minute, drilling in a low shot after a one-two with strike partner Senijad Ibricic who converted a penalty in added time.
Sibenik squandered a hatful of good chances after the opening goal, striker Ermin Zec missing three sitters while Ivan Medvid and Jusuf Dajic also went close either side of halftime.
It was Hajduk's first trophy since 2005, when they last won the Croatian league title before traditional foes Dinamo Zagreb captured five in a row.
Hajduk coach Stanko Poklepovic added: "It is very nice to be a part of Hajduk today and we are very proud to have played in this final and won the silverware."

Olsen Hails The A-League

EXCLUSIVE: Former Manchester United and Denmark star Jesper Olsen has hailed the A-League’s growing quality and says the competition plays a similar role to the Danish SAS Ligaen.
The Melbourne Heart assistant coach has been a keen watcher of the A-League since its inception. Now Olsen has begun preparing Heart for their inaugural A-League season under head coach John van't Schip.
Olsen has lived in Melboune in recent years after arriving with an exceptional CV. The tricky striker was part of the famous Danish national side of 1986 dubbed the "Dashing Danes".
He was signed by Manchester United where he played for four seasons in the mid-1980s.
Olsen also plied his trade with van't Schip's former club Ajax Amsterdam.
And he sees the A-League as a perfect stepping stone for the best local players who have ambitions abroad - just like in Denmark.
"The A-League is a bit like the SAS League in Denmark," he said.
"We are a country that develops talent, and an important role of the SAS League is to create players for other levels.
"Some players will stay in Denmark and become great domestic stars while others will move to countries like England, Holland, Germany, Italy, France and Spain to compete with and against some of the best players in the world.
"In Australia, we now have a league which gives the opportunity to young player to not only play in the A-League but also be spotted by those other countries.
"That will evolve the A-League into a place where if you are good enough, you will leave the A-league and give space to other young players coming through, which is essential to growing Australian football at all levels."
The likes of Tommy Oar who has just gone abroad, is an example of a player who spent a very short time in the A-League before going abroad, and has the ability to show that the A-League is a stepping stone to greater things.
"Players like Tommy will form the core of the next generation of Socceroos," predicts Olsen.
"There are also players such as James Holland, Dario Vidosic and Matthew Spiranovic who have already gone abroad and have a big role to play.
"The A-League has become more of a showcase for other countries as the whole package is delivered at a much higher level.
"The teams are playing in the Asian Champions League so there is an entire package which is looked at completely differently to the old NSL.
"What has happened over the last five years has elevated Australian football to a different level in terms of competitiveness as well as product as a world game."

EXCLUSIVE: Melbourne Heart acquisition Wayne Srhoj says there’s one thing he definitely won’t miss from playing with Perth Glory...
"I'm not one to dwell on the past but the travel is a big plus," the Heart signing tells au.fourfourtwo.com. "Especially when you lose an away game it's a long journey back.
"That isn't something I'll be missing."
But as the 28-year-old North Queenslander admits, it's not the only reason he joined Heart.
The club's clever strategy of bringing in a highly credentialed foreign coach - former Oranje and Ajax Amsterdam assistant John van't Schip - has huge appeal for a man who still holds Socceroo ambitions.
It's the same strategy taken by Sydney FC over 12 months ago to stunning success with the appointment of former Sparta Prague and Czech U/21 boss Vitezslav Lavicka.
And Srhoj certainly can see the benefits of having someone with the reputation of van't Schip.

While Heart continue feverish negotiations with AAMI Park for a workable long-term tenancy, it's understood the club would prefer to play the Melbourne derby after the AFL season is over in early October.
Either way, former Joey Srhoj is in no doubt about what effect playing at the stadium will have on van't Schip's red and whites.
Srhoj added: "It'll want players to take it the next level playing at home at such a good stadium and hopefully with good crowds, it'll be a real buzz."

"I'm not one to dwell on the past but the travel is a big plus," the Heart signing tells au.fourfourtwo.com. "Especially when you lose an away game it's a long journey back.

But as the 28-year-old North Queenslander admits, it's not the only reason he joined Heart.

Age No Barrier To Heart Start

MELBOURNE Heart's young recruits are delighted to hear that age will have no bearing when comes to John vant Schip's team selection this season.
The A-League new boys have recruited plenty of experience with the likes of John Aloisi, Simon Colosimo and Clint Bolton, with all three expected to feature heavily this season.
However, young talent has been an important part of the recruiting process as well with Heart keen to build players for the future.
Not that the 'kids' have been brought in to make up the numbers.
New boy and former Melbourne Victory youth player Kliment Taseski told the Dandenong Leader: "John (van't Schip) has said to everyone that if you're good enough you'll play, regardless of what age you are and where you come from.
"If you perform on the park, you'll get a shot.
I truly believe that, and it was one of the big reasons I wanted to come here."
Taseski, a midfielder with Australian youth honours, admits he is basking in life at Heart.
I'm just loving it at the moment," he said. "It's the first time I've been signed as a professional. It brings a smile to my face every time I think about it.
It's a cliche, but I'm doing what I love and I'm doing it every single day.
I couldn't ask for anything better."
Meanwhile Indian international Gouramangi Singh is set to spend two weeks with the club with a view to a long-term deal.
Singh will link up with Heart throughout June, taking part in the side's pre-season drive as preparations continue for its Hyundai A-League debut.
A central defender, Singh played a pivotal role in India's victorious 2008 AFC Challenge Cup campaign, helping the unfancied side secure direct qualification to next year's Asian Cup in Qatar where they have been grouped with the Qantas Socceroos.
Earning 21 caps at international level to date, the 24-year-old clinched the ‘Best Defender' award as he helped lead Churchill Brothers SC to the 2008/09 I-League crown and qualification for the preliminary phase of the 2010 AFC Champions League.
Van ‘t Schip revealed he is looking forward to having the opportunity to gain an insight into Singh's potential to adapt to the rigours of the Australian game.
"Indian football is very much an unknown quantity, but I am confident Gouramangi has the potential to make an impression here in Melbourne," he said.
"Despite his age, he is already an accomplished international footballer, having played in a number of important matches for India, including World Cup qualifiers.
"The club will have a close look at his ability, and determine whether he is both capable of making the transition to the Hyundai A-League and playing the football we want to play."
Melbourne Heart FC Chief Executive Officer Scott Munn believes the move is an important first step in building closer ties between Australian and Indian football.
"India has a long history of getting behind its sportspeople.
If Melbourne Heart FC or the Hyundai A-League can assist in developing the profile and quality of Indian football and Indian footballers, there are obvious benefits to football in the Asian confederation," he said.

New Delhi: The Gods certainly seem to be smiling on Indian football lately.
On the back of India's successful qualification for the Asian Cup 2011, after a gap of more than two decades, and the recent signing of Indian international striker Sunil Chettri by Kansas City Wizards, there is more good news awaiting Indian football.
Indian international stopper back and last season's Defender of the Year Gouramangi Singh could become the second Indian player from the current squad and only the fourth Indian player in history to ply his trade abroad.
His trial with A-League club Melbourne Heart was confirmed by the player's Melbourne-based manager Lyndon Miranda.
"It is with great pleasure that I would like to confirm to Indian football fans across the globe that Melbourne Heart FC, a Melbourne based A-League club are keen on inviting Gouramangi Singh for a two-week trial from the 7th of June till the 19th of June 2010 and the same has been duly accepted by Gouramangi Singh.
If he makes it through the trial, Gouramangi would go on to be the first Indian to ply his trade on Australian soil.
I am extremely excited about this prospect," said Lyndon Miranda.
Gouramangi Singh was ecstatic about the prospects of playing in Australia, whose team is a rising power in world football.
